Artist Statement

As a visual artist with a professional exhibition practice spanning two centuries and two continents, I have been a Rhode Islander by choice for nearly a quarter century. Born and raised in the heart of the United States, I began expressing myself creatively through performance and three-dimensional art forms, namely dance and sculpture. But paper, pencils, and paint were never far away, and as an undergraduate Fine Arts/Studio Art major, I found myself deeply immersed in two-dimensional art forms. This shift proved practical: soon after graduation, I headed to Germany, where I spent most of the next decade making art while also studying art history, philosophy, and pedagogy before returning to the US on the eve of the twenty-first century. As a young artist on the move, painting, drawing, and mixed-media artworks on paper let me keep creating—and transport and exhibit—my artwork without the constraints of time and space. Now settled in the same expansive home studio space for the past twenty years, I keep these forms central to my creative practice, even as I occasionally wander in other directions, new and old, alone or when collaborating with others.
